Daniel Ogunmodede, the head coach of Remo Stars says his side is focused on winning the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier League (NPFL), following a 2-1 victory over Rivers United in Ikenne on Monday.
Haruna Hadi and Franck Mawuena’s second half goals canceled Andy Okpe’s first half strike for Rivers, ensuring the Sky Blue Stars secured their first ever league win over the one time NPFL champion.
Remo’s victory places them comfortably on the second spot with 56 points, and means the 2023/24 NPFL title race will go down to the wire as we approach the remaining six games.
One point separates the Sky Blue Stars and Rangers International who have amassed 57 points after 32 games played.
While Rangers’ Fidelis Ilechukwu claimed winning the league isn’t his side’s target for the campaign despite leading on the log, Remo’s Ogunmodede didn’t hide his team’s ambitions.
“The title is in view for Remo Stars. Since Rangers United says they’re still building, we’ll try to capitalise on that to win the league,” the 43-year-old said in a video posted by the team’s media on X (formerly Twitter).
Ogunmodede also gave his verdict on leading the Ikenne-based club to their first-ever win over Rivers, while commending the officiating in the game
“Based on recent performances, we played against the best team in the NPFL. A very good side, filled with lofty players.
“It looked like a final match—all other fixtures were suspended, so the focus was on the match. There was a lot of pressure on the players.
“They [Rivers Unite] made it very difficult for us in the first half, and got a penalty. Initially, I felt the penalty call was questionable, but after further checks, I think it was a great call from the referee. Kudos to him.”
