The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) week 17 delivered another thrilling twist in the title race as Rivers United seized the top spot with a hard-fought home victory.
Meanwhile, several title rivals faltered, dropping crucial points across the country and shaking up both ends of the table.
Rivers United rise to the top
Rivers United seized the top spot after edging Wikki Tourists 1–0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
Taofeek Otaniyi struck in the 19th minute, a goal that proved decisive as Finidi George’s side stretched their unbeaten run to nine matches.
The Pride of Rivers now sit top with 33 points from 16 games, becoming the third team to lead the league this season.
At the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Ikorodu City and Katsina United cancelled each other out in a goalless draw.

The Oga Boys remained third despite missing the chance to close the gap at the top, while Katsina United moved into mid-table security.
Enugu Rangers showed resilience in Benin City, coming from behind to draw 1–1 with Bendel Insurance.
Promise Anyanwu put the hosts ahead late on, but Chidozie Iwundu struck in stoppage time to salvage a point for the Flying Antelopes.
Shooting Stars picked up their second away win of the season with a narrow 1–0 victory over Barau FC in Kano. Sodiq Ibrahim’s ninth-minute goal separated both sides.
Abia Warriors continued their impressive road form, edging Kun Khalifat 1–0 in an Oriental derby. Suraju Lawal’s late strike sealed maximum points.
Defending champions Remo Stars slipped again, losing 2–1 to Bayelsa United in Yenagoa. Victor Mbaoma opened the scoring for Remo, but goals from Fabby Clark and Emo James turned the game around for the hosts.
Nasarawa United missed the chance to return to the top as they were held to a goalless draw by Plateau United in Jos. Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars also played out a scoreless stalemate in Ozoro.
Enyimba returned to winning ways with a commanding 3–1 victory over Kwara United, as Samuel Agu and Chidera Michael found the net.

Niger Tornadoes produced one of the standout performances of the round, sweeping aside El-Kanemi Warriors 3–0, with Rickson Mendos scoring twice.

Victor Mbaoma of Remo Stars has overtaken Anas Yusuf as the league’s top scorer with seven goals. Chidozie Iwundu is placed second with six goals, followed by Anas with six as well.
Rivers United will now face a demanding run to protect their lead, starting with an away clash against Barau FC on Thursday before travelling to Katsina United on Sunday.
Ikorodu City will head to Enugu Rangers hoping to catch up, while Nasarawa United will look to respond at home as well when they host Barau FC later in the week.
