Remo Stars recorded their first-ever victory over Rivers United in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Port Harcourt-based side in Ikenne on Monday, May 6.
After suffering six losses and 2 draws in their last eight encounters against the Pride of Rivers, it appeared as though the unwanted record will be extended today, as the Sky Blue Stars’ defence was breached in the 19th minute.
It was Andy Okpe who scored for Stanley Eguma’s Rivers from the spot after Deputy Echeta was tripped in the box.
Try as they may, the Remo Stars failed to register a single shot on target in the first half and headed into the break trailing for the first time at home this season.
The Daniel Ogunmodede-led side, however, came back stronger in the second half and got a deserved equaliser in the 68th minute, when Haruna Hadi scored off Sikiru Alimi’s assist.
15 minutes later, Togolese international Franck Mawuena nodded home a corner kick from Adams Olamilekan to seal the victory for Remo Stars.
The victory takes Remo to second on the log with 56 points, one point adrift table toppers Rangers after 32 games played. Rivers, on the other hand, remains 13 on the log with 28 games played.
