Mesut Ozil kicked out of Fenerbahce team, joins new club

Former Arsenal Midfielder – Mesut Ozil, has formally signed with Istanbul Basaksehir after his deal with Fenerbahce was terminated.

Ozil rejected an offer from MLS team DC United after his contract with the Gunners was cut short by six months and instead chose to play with the Turkish club in January 2021.

His game time in Istanbul has been unsatisfactory as the former Real Madrid star only managed one assist in 11 games during his first half-season with the team.

Before a brawl with manager Ismail Kartal in March resulted in their dismissal from the first squad for the remainder of the season, Ozil’s performance did improve, although he still only scored eight goals in 22 Super Lig matches the previous season.

The club statement reads;

It has been agreed that the contract between our club and Mesut Ozil will be terminated by mutual agreement. It presents to the public; We wish Mesut Ozil success for the rest of his career.”

During his time away from the team, Ozil maintained his conviction that he would not be leaving this summer, but as his departure was announced on Wednesday, it seems he has reversed his position.

One of the things that makes life is that it is full of uncertainties. Our plans, desires and wishes may not always go in the direction you want them to. I wanted to achieve success by getting more chances to play in the Fenerbahçe jersey, which has always been my childhood dream.” – Ozil said.

The 33-year-old is currently a player for Istanbul Basaksehir, a Fenerbahce local rival. The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is friendly with the team and knows Ozil well.

I would like to thank the Fenerbahçe community and fans for the great support they have shown me.” – Ozil added.
