AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Amoo applauds Super Eagles’s interim coaches for steady progress

Under the Austine Eguavoen-led interim coaching crew, the Super Eagles have earned two wins and a draw in their AFCON 2025 qualifiers, topping Group D with seven points.

Fatai Amoo, a former Flying Eagles head coach, has commended the efforts of the Super Eagles’s interim coaching crew in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

In September, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appointed Austine Eguavoen as the interim head coach, with Fidelis Ilechukwu of Rangers International and Remo Stars’ head coach serving as his assistants. Under this trio, the Super Eagles have secured two wins and one draw, the most recent being a 1-0 victory over Libya in Uyo on Friday, October 11.

“So far, they have done quite well. In terms of results, we might say they didn’t fully meet public expectations, but overall, the team performed well,” Amoo said in an interview with Brila.net.

Amoo also addressed the pressure on the coaches, emphasising the need for patience given the squad’s limitations. “Our expectations are high because of records. But if we bring in Pep Guardiola today, do you think he could magically transform some of the players we have? Let’s be honest with ourselves,’’ the former Shooting Stars manager said.

Using the game against Libya as an example, Amoo highlighted the importance of squad rotation to keep players fresh and provide more opportunities for fringe players.

“Honestly, the coaches did well, but they need to reshuffle the team more often. Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze performed admirably. Perhaps Chidera Ejuke could have gotten some minutes too; his dribbling ability could offer more creativity in games like that.”

Following the victory over Libya, the Super Eagles now sit atop their AFCON 2025 qualifying group with seven points from three matches. A win in their next fixture against Libya at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benghazi on Tuesday, October 15, will seal their qualification for the tournament.
