Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi grabbed a first-half goal, as Nottingham Forest secured a vital 2-0 victory over West Ham in their English Premier League (EPL) Matchday 24 fixture.
Awoniyi who missed Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) outing due to injury got his first start since his return today, and the 26-year-old’s goal alongside Callum Hudson-Odoi’s 95th-minute strike ends Forest’s four-match winless run, as they go five points clear of the bottom three.
The opening minutes of the encounter saw an end-to-end exchange between both sides at the City Ground, with Awoniyi’s shot routinely saved by Alphonse Areola after Anthony Elanga and Mohammed Kudus had both been denied at the two ends of the pitch.
Awoniyi’s opener however came in the last minute of the first half, as the Nigerian international got the better of Nayef Aguerd after being played on by Nicolas Dominguez for his sixth league goal in 14 appearances for The Reds this season.
West Ham were again reminded of Awoniyi’s threat early in the second half when he headed over from Hudson-Odoi’s cross before he was eventually replaced by Divock Origi in the 67th minute.
Odio wrapped up the win for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in the 95th minute, condemning David Moyes’ West Ham to their third consecutive loss.
