Ex-Bayern Munich striker Joshua Orobosa Zirkzee has disclosed the potential circumstances that could lead him to switch his national allegiances from the Netherlands to Nigeria.
Zirkzee who was born in the Netherlands to a Dutch father and Nigerian mother joined Bologna from Bayern Munich in 2022, where he has scored 11 goals in 44 league outings for the Italian club.
Although the 22-year-old has represented the Netherlands throughout his youth career, he welcomes the idea of switching to the Super Eagles, if he doesn’t receive an invitation from the Orange’s senior team.
“Choosing Nigeria? It’s not easy to say,” Zirkzee reacted to speculations surrounding his international allegiance via Eurofootcom.
“If the Netherlands aren’t calling, then I’ll choose Nigeria.
“Are they even calling? Maybe. The competition there for attackers is perhaps just as great as in the Dutch team. Nigeria has (Victor) Boniface, (Victor) Osimhen, and many more attackers.
“My dream has always been the Dutch national team. However, the EURO is not necessarily a crossroad. If that doesn’t happen then, I’ll look further,” he concluded.
With his club career finally on the rise at Bologna this season, it remains to be seen where Zirkzee’s international pendulum will rest.
