Timo Werner back to RB Leipzig, says he’s hoping to play at Stamford Bridge again

Timo Werner is back to the Bundesliga team – RB Leipzig, less than two years after departing to join the Blues at Stamford Bride.

Timo Werner has returned to RB Leipzig on a four-year deal after leaving the club two years ago for Chelsea for a fee of £47.5 million (€50 million).

Despite rumors that his return would primarily be on a loan with a buy option, the Bundesliga club has however signed him on a permanent deal that runs until 2026.

Although he’s been noted as one of Europe’s top marksmen when he was signed from the Bundesliga team in 2020, the German forward fell short of expectations in the Premier League.

Werner found a way out and has made a return back to Leipzig on a permanent basis after a disagreement with Thomas Tuchel on his position at Stamford Bridge.

In his farewell massage to Chelsea on social media, Timo Werner said;

Today marks the end of my journey with Chelsea FC. I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at this special club. At this point I would like to express my appreciation for my teammates, the coaches & staff, and especially for you, the special supporters of Chelsea Football Club. I felt 90 much love and support throughout the last two years and I will never forget how you guys stood behind me in good and in challenging times! We lifted trophies like the Champions League together and I will always remember the song you wrote and chanted for me. I’m already looking forward to hopefully playing at Stamford Bridge again one day!”

The 26-year-old, who had previously scored 95 goals for Leipzig between 2016 and 2020 and still holds the club record, managed just 10 Premier League goals in 56 outings for the Blues.

Even though Werner failed to reach the heights expected of him following his move to Stamford Bridge two years ago, his 23 goals in all competitions since joining the Blues are tied for the most in the team with Kai Havertz, who also signed from the Bundesliga in 2020.

Werner has made 89 appearances and has contributed to 40 goals directly with 17 assists, second only to Mason Mount (46 goal involvements in 108 games).
