Rivers United have finally secured a spot in the CAF Confederation’s Cup group stage after putting out a solid performance against Al Nasr Benghazi on Wednesday night.
Second half equaliser from Nyima Nwagua was all the Port Harcourt outfit needed to cruise past their Lybian counterpart during the CAF Confederation’s Cup additional playoff round 2nd leg game at the Benina Martyrs Stadium.
The Pride of Rivers came into the encounter with huge margin after Ebube Duru, Kazie Enyinnaya, Paul Acquah and Malachi Ohawume all found back of the net during the first leg of the clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium last week Wednesday.
Al Nasr were hoping to bounce back from the 5-0 defeat in Port Harcourt and they quickly took the lead in the 39th minute through Abdulsalam Al Fitouri.
The hosts failed to take charge of the game after that goal, only for Nyima Nwagua to draw Rivers United level in 56th minute with a stylish back heel into the net.
The Rivers United forward couldn’t contain his excitement as he happily pulled his hand on his chest to mark his goal with the Cristiano Ronaldo new celebration.
The NPFL champions Rivers United will now feature in the money spinning group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup after they drew 1-1 with Al Nasr in Libya to go through 6-1 on aggregate.
The Stanley Eguma side now be the only Nigerian club in the group stage of a continental club competition going into the new year.
Rivers United will be featuring in the group stage of the confederation Cup for the first time since 2017. The CAF Confederation Cup Group Stage draw will hold on Wednesday, 16 November 2022 in Cairo, Egypt.
