With a 2-1 victory over Dakkada FC at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Wednesday, Rivers United maintained their lead in the Nigeria Professional Football League, thanks to a brace from Ishaq Kayode Rafiu.

Ishaq Kayode scored for the “Pride of Rivers” in the 33rd minute, sprinting through to slide home a Chijioke Akuneto pass.

Against the run of play, Emmanuel Ayaosi equalised for the visitors with a spectacular strike from outside the box that found the back of the net.

Ishaq Kayode scored his second and ninth goals of the season in the 61st minute, converting a penalty after a Dakkada FC defender was penalised for ball handling.

The Wike Boys deserved to win, and Technical Manager Stanley Eguma made no apologies in his post-match press conference.

It was a good game, 3 points in the bag. I also commend our opponent. They also played good football. The tried to create an upset today but our players lived up to expectation. Actually it was a difficult game, a little of fatigue on my team and it affected our goal rush early in the game. So I commend their effort.”

In the NPFL rankings, the victory put Rivers United two points ahead of Remo Stars in second position and four points ahead of Plateau United in third.

On Sunday, February 6th, 2022, Plateau United will face Rivers United in Jos.
