The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) week 11 delivered drama, exciting results, and late twists across the country, but none bigger than Rivers United’s stunning victory over Nasarawa United in Port Harcourt.
The result blew the title race wide open, as Abia Warriors climbed to the summit while Enyimba finally ended their five-game winless run.
Rivers United end Nasarawa United’s reign after NPFL week 11
Rivers United ended league leaders Nasarawa United’s grip on the NPFL summit with a dramatic 1-0 victory at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Timothy Zachariah’ decisive strike condemned the Solid Miners to their second defeat of the season and handed the Pride of Rivers a morale-boosting win that lifts them to 8th place on the table.
The game was quite a tough battle from the first whistle, with Nasarawa United struggling to assert their usual dominance.
Rivers United absorbed pressure and capitalised on a key defensive lapse to score the lone goal of the match.
Despite the presence of the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, cheering them on, the Solid Miners could not break through Rivers’ resilient backline.

The wet pitch further disrupted Nasarawa’s passing rhythm, leaving the visitors frustrated as the game ended 1-0.
During press conference, coach Mangut Mbwas of Nasarawa United acknowledged his team’s efforts, praising their determination while congratulating Rivers United for taking advantage of their opportunity.
“It’s unfortunate that the game turned out this way, despite coming this strong after a series of games and confidence building.
“We knew it was not going to be easy here against Rivers United, having had some not-too-good results at their home ground.
“We did all we could to curtail their aggressiveness, but they took advantage of their chance, coupled with the fact that the playing turf was so wet, which affected our pattern of play because we could not circulate the ball as we had wanted.”
The gaffer added that they are a young team, self-motivated, and strongly supported by the Nasarawa State Government, expressing their desire to make a name for themselves and the people of the State.
He also stated that they will do everything humanly possible to finish decently on the league table at the end of the season.
