Remo Stars and Rivers United return to African battlegrounds this Saturday, each chasing the final ticket into the coveted group stage of the CAF Champions League.
After clearing their first preliminary hurdles with authority, the two Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) sides now confront the ultimate test of grit, ambition, and continental pedigree.
Remo Stars’ moment of truth against Sundowns
The Sky Blue Stars have enjoyed a sparkling start to their continental campaign. The NPFL champions dispatched US Zilimandjou 5–0 on aggregate—4–0 at home in Abeokuta—and sealed it with a composed 1–0 road win (via a penalty by Alex Ayowah).
That rendered the Ikenne side confident, sharp, and ready for what comes next.
But their next opponent is far sterner: Mamelodi Sundowns, the South African powerhouse.

Sundowns skipped the opening round thanks to their high CAF ranking and last season’s exploits, and under Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso, they’ll be looking for nothing short of dominance.
Daniel Ogunmodede and his men will host the first leg on home soil, seeking a result that keeps their dreams alive at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta by 4:00pm on Sunday before the tougher leg in Tshwane.
Rivers United aim to continue unbeaten run
Across the continent, Rivers United are in Maputo preparing to face Black Bulls FC in their second preliminary tie.
The Pride of Rivers earned their spot by edging Aigles du Congo 1–0 at home, thanks to Stephen Manyo’s decisive header from a loose ball after a free kick.

Despite having lost 2–1 at home recently to Bayelsa United in domestic action, Rivers United remain undefeated in continental matches this season.
Now, they hope to take a solid result back to Nigeria ahead of a return leg in safe conditions. Both sides will face each other at the Lalgy Sport Arena in Matola, Mozambique.
Key players and decisive moments to watch
Alex Ayowah (Remo Stars): The penalty taker who delivered the clincher against Zilimandjou. He’ll be crucial in high-pressure moments and could strike when space arises.
Stephen Manyo (Rivers United): The defender-turned-match-winner. His aerial ability and reading of loose balls will be essential, especially from set pieces.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ squad depth: With experience in continental competition, their attack and midfield could test Remo Stars’ defence.
Black Bulls’ resilience at home: African home ties are never won in the first leg; Rivers United must guard against complacency and counterattacks.
For both NPFL clubs, this is more than just a match. Advancing means greater prestige, higher revenue, and the chance to pit Nigerian football against Africa’s elites.
Remo Stars could affirm the rise of NPFL clubs on the continental stage. Rivers United have an opportunity to further seal their reputation under Finidi George’s stewardship.
A misstep here would end ambitions and expose weaknesses. A performance, on the other hand, can become a statement for the season.
