Rivers United produced a spirited display in Uyo to defeat Black Bulls 3–1 in their CAF Champions League second-leg clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, sealing their place in the group stage of Africa’s premier club competition.

Rivers United beat Black Bulls 3-1

The CAF Champions League fixture was moved from Sunday to Saturday due to Davido’s concert at the stadium, and the switch appeared to favour the NPFL giants, who arrived in Uyo with renewed belief despite losing the first leg 1–0 in Maputo.

Following Remo Stars’ shocking 5–1 collapse to Mamelodi Sundowns, the Port Harcourt side walked into the showdown carrying the hopes of a football-loving nation.

Finidi George’s men started with intensity and purpose, and their hunger set the tone for a historic night.

First group stage qualification in club history

Rivers United have finally booked their spot in the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time ever, achieving the milestone on their fourth attempt.

After years of near-misses, heartbreak, and continental learning curves, the Pride of Rivers finally broke the barrier—and did it in dramatic fashion.

Nigeria’s first CAFCL group stage team in seven years

The victory makes Rivers United the first Nigerian club to reach the CAF Champions League group phase since Lobi Stars achieved the same feat in the 2018/19 campaign.

In an era where NPFL clubs have struggled on the continent, this achievement arrives as a massive boost for Nigerian club football and its battered continental reputation.

Diallo: The only player to score in both legs

Despite exiting the competition, Black Bulls forward Moctar Diallo made history of his own.

He scored in both legs of the tie—early in the second half in Maputo and again in the 47th minute in Uyo—becoming the first player to score against Rivers United in consecutive continental matches.

His goal briefly dragged the aggregate score level before the Pride of Rivers roared back.

United’s biggest win of the season

The 3–1 result stands as Rivers United’s biggest win of the current campaign, and it came when the stakes were highest.

Wasiu Falolu struck first in the 15th minute, capitalising on chaos from a set piece. Maclyn Biokpo doubled the lead from the spot in the 42nd minute, sending the keeper the wrong way.

After Diallo’s lifeline for the visitors, Timothy Zachariah landed the knockout punch in the 76th minute—smashing home a brilliant effort to seal the job at 3–2 on aggregate.

Finidi makes history from the dugout

Finidi George carved his name into the record books as the first Nigerian coach in seven years to guide a Nigerian club into the CAF Champions League group stage.

His tactical composure, timely in-game adjustments, and belief in his squad proved vital—especially after Black Bulls threatened a comeback.

A Night of Records. A Statement of Intent.

From the drama of the rescheduled fixture to the emotional charge of a nation’s expectations, Rivers United rose to the moment, and now, they are in the Champions League.

Now, with bigger challenges ahead in the group phase, the question shifts from qualification to how far they can go in Africa’s biggest club competition.
