Remo Stars suffered a crushing 5–1 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns in Abeokuta on Sunday, delivering a disastrous first-leg result in their CAF Champions League second preliminary clash.
The heavy loss piles pressure on the Sky Blue Stars and leaves Nigeria’s continental bid further shaken, especially with Rivers United also stumbling in their own first leg.
Remo Stars crumble in front of home fans
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions made the worst possible start at the MKO Abiola Stadium as Sundowns took control early, pressed with confidence, and punished every defensive mistake.
The visitors led 2–0 by half-time and showed their class again after the restart, stretching the scoreline to an emphatic 5–1.
The hosts looked disjointed, struggled in transitions, and failed to match Sundowns’ tempo or organisation.
The defeat is a brutal reality check for the Ikenne Boys, whose continental ambitions now hang by a thread.
They must deliver a near-perfect second-leg performance to salvage their CAF Champions League campaign, which will obviously be more difficult considering they are playing away.
Rivers United also under pressure after away defeat
At the other end, the Pride of Rivers did not fare much better on Saturday, falling 1–0 to Black Bulls in Mozambique.
Despite a spirited display, the Finidi George side lacked a cutting edge in the final third and were undone by Moctar Diallo’s strike early in the second half.
The result leaves Rivers United needing a strong response in Uyo when the second leg comes to Nigeria next Sunday.
With both Remo Stars and Rivers United losing their opening legs, the NPFL now faces a defining test on the continent.
The second legs will determine whether Nigeria retains strong representation in the CAF Champions League group stage.
Remo Stars must regroup quickly, show tactical maturity, and cut out the errors that cost them heavily at home.
Meanwhile, Rivers United still have a clearer route to recovery, but both NPFL giants must respond decisively if Nigeria is to avoid another early continental setback.
