In a significant development for Nigerian football, the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) has joined Sevilla FC’s ‘World Club Alliance Program’. This partnership aims to boost the development of Nigerian football, focusing on coach training and nurturing young talent.

Gbenga Elegbeleye, NPFL’s President, recently visited Sevilla FC in Spain, meeting with club President José María del Nido Carrasco and touring the historic Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium. The visit marked the beginning of what promises to be a fruitful collaboration between Nigerian football and the Spanish giants.

Speaking about the partnership, Elegbeleye expressed optimism about its potential impact on Nigerian football. “With Sevilla’s development strategy and youth programme, Nigeria can greatly benefit,” he stated.

“We believe that the best players in the Nigeria Youth League will have the opportunity to train in Sevilla each season. This experience, along with Sevilla’s expertise, will help them become better players upon their return.”

The agreement also includes provisions for coaching development, which Elegbeleye described as “a win-win arrangement for everyone in the NPFL.” This initiative is expected to elevate the standard of coaching across Nigeria’s 20 premier league clubs and their respective youth academies.

Interestingly, Sevilla FC has been gaining popularity among Nigerian football fans following the signing of Nigerian player Chidera Ejuke.

“When they signed Chidera Ejuke from Royal Antwerp, Nigerians showed a lot of interest in Sevilla FC,” Elegbeleye noted. “All the football lovers in Nigeria are happy. They want to know more about Sevilla now, and the fan base in Nigeria is growing every day.”

This partnership represents a significant step in Sevilla FC’s international expansion. It offers an unprecedented opportunity for Nigerian football to tap into European expertise. As the collaboration unfolds, Nigerian football enthusiasts can look forward to improvements in local player development and coaching standards, potentially paving the way for more Nigerian talents to shine on the global stage.

The NPFL delegation also visited Sevilla’s training facilities at the Ciudad Deportiva José Ramón Cisneros Palacios, where initial working meetings were held to kickstart this exciting new chapter in Nigerian football.

Sevilla are also on the verge of completing the signing of Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho on a free transfer, adding to the Nigerian contingent on their roster ahead of the 2024/25 season.
