The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the league’s Framework and Rules ahead of the Matchday 21 fixtures scheduled for the weekend.
Davidson Owumi, NPFL’s Chief Operating Officer, emphasised this commitment after convening with Heads of Departments on Thursday, urging heightened vigilance among secretariat staff to uphold the league’s integrity by preventing illicit activities from compromising its administration.
“We have entered the home stretch of the season after crossing the halfway line and our experience over the years is that this is when desperation sets in for the clubs,” Owumi said.
“There will be desperation to try to win the title or a continental ticket just as others will throw in everything to escape relegation.
“Our responsibility is to be vigilant in monitoring everyone including match officials, players, club officials and those who would scheme to compromise the game.”
Owumi further charged all stakeholders to unite in elevating the league’s standards. He stressed the importance of collective efforts from referees, club leaders, players, fans, and judicial bodies to uphold credibility.
“I am inviting every stakeholder to work with us to ensure that we improve on the gains of last season to deliver another credible competition,” Owumi added.
“Our Referees, Match Commissioners, Club leaders, players, fans and also our Judicial bodies should all make contributions to ensure that we can in the end say we are proud of our efforts.”
Owumi reassures clubs of fairness and pledges to enforce rules diligently, whilst acknowledging the Nigeria Football Federation’s support in upholding disciplinary decisions in the face of undue political influence.
NPFL Matchday 21 kicks off with Doma United vs Enugu Rangers at Pantami Stadium in Gombe on Saturday by 1 pm (WAT).
