Daniel Ogunmodede, Remo Stars head coach, has expressed his frustration over the low salaries that Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clubs offer head coaches.
Ogunmodede, who’s in his second stint as Remo’s head coach highlighted the meagre paychecks as a significant hindrance to the NPFL which should be growing at a faster pace given its 52-year history.
“The money is not encouraging. The money is extremely not encouraging. If a team in Rwanda can pay coaches $10,000 to $15,000, and we are here paying less than a million naira for a coach, which is less than $1,000, what do you expect?” Ogunmodede said on Brila FM. “This is a coach that goes to one match and everybody wants money from him, everybody.”
The 44-year-old also expressed his satisfaction with the appointment of Finidi George as Rivers United’s head coach. He urged ex-Super Eagles players in coaching to consider lending their hands to the development of the NPFL by taking up managerial roles.
“I will be extremely happy. Imagine we have a Finidi, an Oliseh, and an Amuneke, our league will also be the talk of the continent. It’s important to have these experienced individuals contribute to our football development. They bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise that can significantly improve the standard of the league,” he added.
While Ogunmodede aimed to lead the Sky Blue Stars to their first NPFL title in the just concluded 2023/24 season, the former Crown F.C. coach finished second for a consecutive time.
Ogunmodede initially managed Remo between 2016 and 2021, before his reappointment on August 5, 2022. In his 703 days as the club’s manager, he has overseen 31 wins, 15 draws and 19 losses in 65 matches, ahead of his contract expiration on June 30, 2025.
