NPFL: Akwa United move closer to title as home teams dominate

It was total dominance from home teams on week 32 in the NPFL led by leaders Akwa United who inched closer to their first league title with an important win.

There were 8 home wins in 9 matches played across the country with the Promise Keepers seeing off defending champions Enyimba in Uyo.

Charles Atshimene scored the decisive winner on 89 minutes from the spot after he converted a penalty won by second half substitute Mfon Udoh to seal a narrow 1-0 win over the People’s Elephant.

Atshimene’s 11th goal of the season earned his club all three points, their 16th win of the season to help them open up a five-point lead at the top of the log.

Rivers United closed the gap between them and Nasarawa United and Kano Pillars with a 2-1 win over Warri Wolves in Port Harcourt.

Emmanuel Ihezuo put Wolves ahead, but Godwin Aguda continued his impressive form for the Garden City boys by scoring two goals to complete the come from behind win for United.

United move up to fourth on the table with 55 points, the same as second-placed Nasarawa and Pillars in third after both teams respectively lost 2-1 and 1-0 to FCIU and Sunshine Stars.

Elsewhere in the league, Rangers bounced from their defeat last time out with a 2-1 win over Wikki Tourist, Abia Warriors defeated Kwara United by the same score line, while Lobi Stars and Jigawa Stars won 1-0 against Plateau United and Adamawa United respectively.

MFM were the only home team that failed to take all three points after Katsina United ensured a share of the spoils following a goalless affair in Agege.

At the other end of the table, Sunshine Stars have moved out of the danger zone for now after today’s win, they occupy 16th position on 36 points the same as Jigawa in 17th.

FCIU, Warri Wolves and Adamawa United complete the relegation spots.
