The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the Black Stars of Ghana 2-1 in a friendly fixture that took centre stage at the Grand de Stade Marrakech in Morocco on Friday, March 22.
Two goals from both halves of the match were enough to grind out the win and ensure Finidi George got the best possible start to his interim role as Super Eagles’ manager, despite a late scuffle from the Ghanaians.
The three-time African champions dominated early proceedings and eventually got a deserved break in the 38th minute after a Black Star handled the ball in the box.
Cyriel Dessers, Nigeria’s topscorer of the 2023/24 club season, lived up to expectations by calmly converting the spot-kick, after Kelechi Iheanacho passed on the duty, to give the team an early advantage.
Dessers and Iheanacho’s wastefulness will, however, go on to prevent the Eagles from extending their lead before the halftime break.
True to his declaration of a hostile game against the Black Stars, coach George introduced Super Eagles trusted wingers Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon after the one-hour mark.
Barely five minutes after his introduction, Lookman doubled Nigeria’s lead to continue his impressive form in the green-white-green jersey, after a nice teamwork was perfectly laid off by Alex Iwobi in the box.
Late on in the 95th minute, Jordan Ayew scored from the spot in with what will be a consolation goal after Bright Osayi Samuel brought down his man in the box.
Next up for Nigeria will be another friendly fixture against Mali on Tuesday, March 26.
