If there’s any group of professionals that have always been relentless in their pursuit of putting the country on the global map, the Super Eagles of Nigeria players remain a strong force to reckon with.
Spread across the globe in various top-flight leagues, Super Eagles players, particularly the forwards, have been a shining light for their respective clubs so far in the 2023/24 season.
In light of this, Football411 takes a look at the Nigerian players who have hit double figures for their clubs as we approach the conclusion of the 2023/24 league campaign.
Top five Eagles top scorer of the 2023/24 season
1. Cyriel Dessers (Rangers, Scottish Premiership)
Top scorer of the inaugural edition of the Europa Conference League, Cyriel Dessers has been in top goal-scoring form for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership this season.
With 12 goals and 3 assists in 26 league appearances, Dessers is leading the Light Blues to their 56th league title, as they ward off competition from rivals Celtic who sit in the second position with two points behind Rangers who have amassed 70 points.
2. Chijioke Mbaoma (Enyimba FC, Nigeria Professional Football League)
After the Matchday 25 fixtures in the NPFL last weekend, Enyimba’s Chijioke Mbaoma overtook Remo Star’s Sikiru Alimi to be the leading NPFL top scorer with 12 goals.
Though Mbaoma has only played 20 times, he has a 46.15% stake in the People’s Elephants total 26 goals of the season.
3. Victor Osimhen (Napoli, Serie A)
2023 CAF Player of the Year Victor Osimhen has scored 11 and assisted three goals for Napoli in 17 Serie A games this season.
Despite missing club actions for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Osimhen is the Partonepie’s leading goalscorer in the league. However, the club’s shambolic title defence is rubbing off on the striker’s output.
Last season, Osimhen scored 26 goals in 32 appearances for the Italian club as they laid claim on the Scudetto for the first time in over three decades.
4. Victor Boniface (Bayer Leverkusen, Bundesliga)
Before his injury, Victor Boniface was arguably the hottest striker in Europe, and the best in Germany.
The 2022/23 UEFA Europa League joint top-scorer won five straight Bundesliga Rookie of the Month awards, only to be impeded by a groin injury whilst on international duty with Nigeria ahead of the AFCON 2023.
Despite his prolonged spell on the sidelines, Boniface currently boasts 10 goals and seven assists in 17 appearances for Leverkusen.
The 23-year-old has returned to training, and will be returning to Xavi Alonso’s setup anytime from now, as the Die Werkself look set to seal their Bundesliga upset and win the title for the first time in their history.
5. Henry Onyekuru (Al Fayha, Saudi Pro League)
Outside Europe, Henry Onyekuru is graciously leading the lines for Al Fayha in the Cristiano Ronaldo-impacted Saudi Pro League.
After 24 league games, Onyekuru is the club’s joint top-scorer with 10 goals and three assists, alongside Zambian Fashion Sakala who has one assist more, after the same amount of games played.
Ahead of Super Eagles friendly matches against Ghana and Mali on March 22 and 26, Osimhen and Dessers are the only players out of the aforementioned to have been handed an invitation by the team’s technical crew, as the search for Jose Peseiro’s successor continues.
