Flying Eagles coach Aliyu Zubair has hailed his side’s resilience after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Colombia on Monday morning sealed their spot in the FIFA U-20 World Cup Round of 16.
Despite conceding early in the second half, the Flying Eagles fought back to level the score, showing the determination that has defined their campaign so far.
Flying Eagles show grit in thrilling battle with Colombia
Colombia went ahead in the 51st minute when Kener Gonzalez struck from close range, punishing a brief lapse in the Nigerian defence.
The Flying Eagles responded with urgency. Early in the match, they had already hit the post and later rattled the crossbar twice, piling relentless pressure on the Colombian backline.
Goalkeeper Jordan Garcia was in inspired form, producing a string of crucial saves to deny Nigeria.
The breakthrough finally came in the 86th minute when captain Daniel Bameyi held his nerve to convert from the penalty spot, bringing the scores level and securing a valuable point that booked Nigeria’s passage to the knockout rounds.

The result confirmed Nigeria’s progress as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament.
They now face a tantalising Round of 16 clash against Argentina in Santiago on Wednesday.
After the match, Zubair praised his side’s discipline and tactical maturity in containing Colombia’s physical approach.
“It wasn’t easy, but we stood our ground and were proactive. We knew they are physically strong and good on the ball, so we tried to deny them passing lanes, and that gave us a little edge.
All we wanted was to qualify for the next round, and we are not worried about who we have to face,” Zubair said confidently.
The young Eagles, with their fearless mindset, will now prepare to face the South American champions.
On Wednesday at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, the seven-time African champions will face a rematch of their iconic 2–0 victory in San Juan.
