Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu has voiced his frustration after Nigeria’s 4–0 defeat to Argentina ended the team’s run at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The heavy loss in Santiago’s Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos brought a disappointing close to a campaign that had promised more after Nigeria advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.
Early goals and poor response cost Flying Eagles dearly
Zubairu admitted that the Flying Eagles never truly recovered from Argentina’s fast start, as two early goals shattered their confidence and tactical shape.
“The early goal is part of what destabilises us. We conceded a goal at a very early stage of the game. Even the second goal came not too far from the first goal,” Zubairu said.
The coach explained that those quick setbacks disrupted the team’s rhythm and exposed a deeper issue — a lack of fighting spirit.
“I think that was what destabilised the whole of our approach, but all the same, I believe the boys did not display positive character.
What I think happened in the match is that the level of our fight anytime we don’t have the ball is not enough.”
That lack of aggression without possession, he said, gave Argentina too much control in midfield and space to create chances.

“That was what was giving the Argentines the opportunity, and they saw a lot of space to operate. So anytime we lose the ball, we are not fighting back quickly.”
Zubairu takes responsibility and shields his Flying Eagles
While disappointment ran deep, Zubairu refused to single out any player. Instead, he took full responsibility for the result — a show of leadership in the face of a tough exit.
“That’s football; sometimes it is like that. I take the blame. I take the responsibilities, not the boys. The day they won, they won. So, when they lose today, I take responsibility.”
With the victory, Argentina advanced to face Mexico in the quarterfinals after the Mexicans recorded a 4–1 win over hosts Chile.
