Finidi George desperate to win 10th NPFL title for Enyimba

Finidi George, Enyimba’s head coach, has insisted his side will give their best shot to retaining the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title in the remaining seven matches in the 2023/24 season.

Eyinmba continues to mount pressure on first-placed Enugu Rangers and are now two points behind the Flying Antelopes, following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Sunshine Stars at the Akure Township Stadium on Sunday.

Promise Awosanmi had given relegation-threatened Sunshine the lead in the 46th minute, but an equaliser from Chidiebere Nnachi in the 71st minute ensured the People’s Elephants left Akure with a point in their NPFL Matchday 31 fixture.

“We’ll continue to push till the end of the season,” coach George told Enyimba’s media.

“This Enyimba, we don’t give up, so we’ll see what happens, others are playing also to see how they can win, I think this one point will go a long way.

“After having this one point here, I think we would build on it and see how we can win at home.”

On the flip side, Rangers’ head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu has downplayed the prospect of winning the NPFL title, despite leading the log with two points.

“I am not thinking about the title. Enyimba, Lobi Stars, and Remo Stars are thinking about it,” Ilechukwu said after the Flying Antelopes’ 2-0 defeat to Rivers United over the weekend.

The ex-Plateau United manager added, “We have a very young team and structure is what we are thinking of. So maybe next season, we can think about the title.

“If I think about that, I will be under pressure and I don’t want to be under pressure because management did not tell me about that.

“I am not even thinking about that but what we are doing is we take the game one after the other but we are also positive.”

Next up for Enyimba is a home game against Katsina United on Sunday, while Rangers will host Plateau United at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on the same day.
