The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title chase has taken a chaotic turn after fans interrupted the top-of-the-table Oriental Derby clash between Rangers International and Enyimba at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday.
Following a goalless 90 minutes between both sides in Enugu, referee John Ojeleye awarded a penalty to Rangers in the seventh minute of added time, which led to Enyimba players staging a workout to protest. Pandemonium ensued afterwards, as fans in their numbers stormed the field, leading to the game being suspended.
A few minutes before the Oriental Derby 5 pm kickoff, Remo Stars lost the opportunity to go top of the league, after losing 3-2 to Lobi Stars at the Lafia City Stadium in Nasarawa.
The relegation battle between the sixth-lowest-ranked team saw Sporting Lagos surrender a 2-0 lead against Bayelsa United, as both teams settled for a 2-2 draw at Samson SiaSia Stadium. Ten-man Heartland defeated Doma United 3-1 at the Akwa City Stadium, as Sunshine Stars defeated Akwa United 2-0 to move to the 11th position on the NPFL log.
Other results saw Rivers United defeat Shooting Stars 1-0 at the Yakubu Gowon International Stadium as Abia Warriors and Bendel Insurance played a goalless draw.
The opening Matchday 35 fixtures on Saturday ended in a 1-1 draw between Kano Pillars and Niger Tornadoes, while Katsina and Plateau United both secured a 4-0 and 2-0 home win over Gombe and Kwara United.
