The Super Eagles of Nigeria were defeated by the ex-coach Genort Rohr-led Benin Republic in their Matchday four fixture of the 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Côte d’Ivoire on Monday.
Following a disappointing 1-1 draw to South Africa in Uyo on Friday, Finidi George in a bid to orchestrate Nigeria’s first victory since the World Cup qualifiers started made three changes to his last starting XI, as the trio of Samuel Chukwueze, Terem Moffi and Raphael Onyedika replaced Paul Onuachu, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Kelechi Iheanacho.
The changes seemed to be the missing link, as Chukwueze combined with Onyedika to put Nigeria ahead in the 27th minute. That goal marked the first time the three-time African champions would take the lead in their past six World Cup qualifying matches.
The lead, however, only lasted for ten minutes, as Jodel Dossou capitalised on a poor defending to equalise for the Cheetahs. Steve Mounie then completed the comeback a few seconds before the halftime break.
George introduced Victor Boniface and Onuachu to amplify Nigeria’s threat, but Benin Republic held onto their lead to go atop of Group C with seven points, as Nigeria remained in the fifth position with three points after four matches.
