The Egyptian Embassy has reportedly denied Rivers United visas into the country ahead of their match against Al Masry.
Rivers United has condemned Egyptian side Al Masry’s antics ahead of this weekend’s CAF TotalEnergies play-off return leg encounter in Alexandria, in what is quickly becoming yet another unpleasant chapter in African sport.
The Wike Boys won 2-1 in the first leg at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba, and now a draw or victory will be enough to advance to the group round.
Rivers United has revealed schemes by Al Masry to disturb the team ahead of this weekend’s encounter, according to Charles Mayuku, the team’s media officer.
The Egyptian Embassy rejected entrance visas to certain members of Rivers United’s contingent, including two journalists, Charles disclosed.
In addition, Al Masry SC has threatened to harm Rivers Utd members in different official social media postings and fan comments.
Threats such as “we will kill you,” “welcome to hell,” and images of knives, machetes, and flares filled the comments section beneath Al Masry’s post.
To add insult to injury, Rivers United also learned that Covid19 test manipulations will be used to further weaken the team’s resolve.
Rivers United has written to Africa’s football governing body, CAF, as well as the Nigerian Embassy in Egypt, to raise their notice to this unsavoury and barbarous plot, the team media boss noted.
Meanwhile, the team remains focused and is scheduled to depart Nigeria on Thursday for the Sunday’s match, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Nigerian time.
