Youri Tielemans, who was heavily linked to a transfer to Arsenal throughout the offseason, has said that despite Leicester City’s dismal season, he is not regretting remaining put.
Youri Tielemans is happy to have some downtime after a trying start to the season thanks to the international break, even though he does not regret staying at Leicester City.
The midfielder is not satisfied with Leicester’s recent six losses and the fact that they have only gained one point in their first seven Premier League games.
Leicester City’s manager Brendan Rodgers came under more criticism after his team lost 5-2 to Brighton and Hove Albion and then suffered a humiliating loss at Tottenham on Saturday.
Outside of Leicester, teams were vying for Tielemans during the recent summer transfer, but the Foxes now run the risk of losing their valuable player for nothing when his contract expires at the end of the campaign.
Tielemans claims he does not regret staying at the King Power Stadium despite the lack of a relocation. However, the midfielder is glad to have joined Belgium and be out of the doldrums for a short while.
In a media briefing held ahead to Belgium’s Nations League games against Wales and the Netherlands, Tielemans said:
“I’m happy to get a bit of fresh air here [on international duty] because it’s tough at Leicester right now. It’s clear that things are not going well at the club. We are doing everything we can as a team. At Leicester, the consecutive defeats have affected us as a group. We need to benefit from this break to recharge our batteries. It’s hard to get it off my mind as it keeps running through my head. Only my kids sometimes prevent me from thinking about it.”
Tielemans is likely to receive a lot of interest from the exact clubs that were heavily linked to him during the transfer window if he doesn’t sign a new contract before January.
Tielemans thinks there is no connection whatsoever between his contractual situation and Leicester’s results.
“I’m not going to speak too much about my contract at the moment. I didn’t leave Leicester in the summer as I always said the project had to be the right one. Just because things are getting worse now at Leicester doesn’t mean I should regret [staying at the club].” – he said.
