Galatasaray’s talisman, Victor Osimhen, reminded the football world why he is regarded as one of the game’s most complete strikers.
His decisive performance in Galatasaray’s 1-0 Champions League win over Liverpool not only secured a vital three points for the Turkish champions but also prompted a public apology from English broadcaster and former Barcelona forward, Gary Lineker.
Victor Osimhen silences critics with big-game brilliance
Lineker, speaking on his ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast alongside Micah Richards and Alan Shearer, admitted he had misjudged the Nigerian star’s mentality and consistency on the big stage.
Osimhen’s impressive display at RAMS Park was the difference-maker. Up against Liverpool’s elite central defensive pair of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, the Nigerian forward’s pace, strength, and aerial dominance proved too much to handle.
He scored the only goal of the tense encounter—a strike that not only secured his team the victory but also made him the highest-scoring Nigerian in UEFA Champions League history.
Unsurprisingly, he was named Man of the Match, capping a night that felt like a personal statement to his doubters.

For Lineker, who had previously questioned Osimhen’s consistency in high-pressure fixtures, the performance was a turning point.
Gary Lineker’s candid apology and praise for Osimhen
Reflecting on the match, Lineker openly apologised to Osimhen:
“I need to apologise to Victor Osimhen. I remember that I intimated that he goes missing sometimes, and I believe that is completely not the case.
So, Victor, if you are listening, I’m sorry about that. You should not spread rumours about these things, so my bad on that.”
Lineker, himself a former striker, didn’t stop there. He went on to hail Osimhen’s qualities, revealing the four essential traits that set the Nigerian apart as a true, complete striker.
“I saw him play against Leicester in the competition a few years ago, in Europe, and he was exceptional.
You really get a feel for somebody when you’re in a stadium. He’s quick, he’s tall, he’s a good finisher, he’s brilliant in the air, he’s a hell of a player.”
Osimhen’s strike against Liverpool was his third goal in five appearances this season, a sign that he is finding rhythm quickly after his summer move to Galatasaray.
His arrival has injected fresh belief into the Turkish champions as they aim to make a deep run in Europe.
