Rivers United proud winning run and long unbeaten run is over after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Sunshine Stars during their Nigeria Professional Football League game on Thursday.
Leonard Ugochukwu’s first half goal saw the home side put an end to Rivers United 12 matches unbeaten run at the Akure township stadium.
With just five minutes into the game, the hosts took the lead as their hitman – Leonard Ugochukwu guides home from close range following a corner kick from Ikenna Cooper.
Leonard Ugochukwu of the Sunshine Stars came close to double his tally two minutes into the second half, but his magnificent header from eight yards sailed over the bar.
On one end, Sochima Victor was called into action in the 64th minute, while on the other, Nyima Nwagua’s effort slightly missed the target.
In the 78th minute, the Sunshine Stars continued to press forward, winning three corner kicks in a row but failing to capitalize.
Ishaq Kayode and Chiamaka Madu, the two United goal scorers in their previous encounter against Enyimba, were replaced two minutes later by Benard Ovoke and Nelson Esor.
However, they were unable to make an effect as the referee blew the final whistle, ensuring the home team’s victory and all three points.
Recall that the last time Plateau United went on 11 Matches unbeaten run this season and played against Sunshine of Akure at home, the Akure Gunners put an end to it
