Slovenian side NK Maribor have officially confirmed the signing of Nigeria Professional Football League Champions Rivers United Forward Rafiu Ishaq.

The 21-year-old international from Nigeria, who was instrumental in Rivers United’s NPFL championship victory last season, has moved up to the top division.

The former 3SC and Remo Stars striker, who signed a 3 years deal with NK Maribor is a player with huge striking force, speed, concreteness and with great physical strength.

NK Maribor made the right choice in grabbing the Super Eagles forward for the purpose of realizing their competitive goals, but also for a further step forward for Maribor in the Slovenian league.

Players from Nigeria have often proved that the country is a breeding ground for talent, Rafiu Ishaq is no exception as he made his mark, helping Rivers United lift the 2021/22 NPFL title.

I am very happy that we agreed and that I signed the contract. After playing in the top tier of the competition in Nigeria and after winning the championship, I had quite a few offers from clubs from Europe, I decided to move to Maribor, because I believe that the best Slovenian club is currently the most suitable choice for me as the next step on the development path” – Rafiu Ishaq said.

Rafiu Ishaq noted that;

As a multiple national champion and a long-term participant in European competitions, Maribor makes it possible for a football player to do what he wants. I am looking forward to a new challenge in my career, I want to contribute my share on the field and I can’t wait to meet my teammates, the professional staff and join the training sessions.

The former Pride of Rivers star further added;

I got a lot of information about the club, also heard about the great support of the fans. I believe that together we will bring them many reasons for satisfaction, with new victories and winning trophies.

Rafiu Ishaq scored 14 league goals and made his Super Eagles debut in the friendly match loss to Mexico in May.

Maribor, who now sits seventh on the log with three points after two games, will play their next PrvaLiga match against Olimpija at Ljudski vrt on August 6.
