Oyo State Governor Engineer Seyi Makinde says the aim for Shooting Stars ahead of next season is a spot in the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) competitions after narrowly missing out in the just concluded season.
The Oluloye Warriors finished fourth in the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, as champions Rangers International, Remo Stars and Enyimba who finished first, second and third respectively will be Nigeria’s representatives (to be joined by the winner between Abia and El-Kanemi Warriors in the FA Cup final) at the 2024/25 CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.
It was the club’s highest finish since they last won the NPFL in 1998, and has consequently drawn plaudits from the state governor who was present at their final match of the season against Sporting Lagos which they won 1-0 at Lekan Salami Stadium.
“The team has made considerable progress in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), finishing in fourth place compared to last season. As it is, there is room for the team to accomplish even more, and we will go back to the drawing board to work towards our goal of qualifying for continental championship next season,” the governor said in a press release.
The NPFL finale victory over the Noisy Lagosians was Shooting’s 10th consecutive home victory.
According to sources, the Oyo State government is in talks with Gbenga Ogunbote for a two-year contract renewal at the Lekan Salami Stadium ahead of next season.
