South Africa have sealed their return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010, ending a turbulent qualifying campaign that tested their resolve.

Osimhen in action

Despite a points deduction earlier in the round, Bafana Bafana showed character and quality, defeating Rwanda’s Wasps 3–0 in a decisive Group C clash to confirm their automatic qualification spot.

Nigeria, meanwhile, finished just one point behind after a dominant 4–0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo.

The Super Eagles’ performance was powered by Victor Osimhen, who delivered a stunning hat-trick to keep Nigeria’s World Cup dream alive.

Frank Onyeka added the fourth in stoppage time, sealing a result that secured their place in the continental playoffs.

Rwanda boss praises Nigeria’s strength and African representation

Rwanda coach Adel Amrouche was gracious in defeat, praising both South Africa and Nigeria for their achievements.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, he extended his congratulations to the Super Eagles, expressing belief that they have what it takes to represent the continent proudly on the world stage.

“I am happy for the coach of Bafana Bafana and for all the teams, because Africa needs people who can represent us — like Nigeria, a strong team that can represent the continent at the World Cup,” Amrouche said.

The Rwandan boss went further, emphasising the weight of expectation that comes with flying Africa’s flag at football’s biggest tournament.

“And now the responsibility is big on them, because when you play for the continent, you must give more than what we saw in these qualifiers. You must always be at the top.”

Super Eagles eye playoff test against Gabon

Nigeria’s focus now shifts to the CAF World Cup playoffs, where they will face Gabon in the semifinal on November 13 in Morocco, pending FIFA’s official October ranking announcement next Thursday.

Under head coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles will look to build on their momentum from Uyo, where Osimhen’s ruthless finishing reignited belief within the camp and among fans.
