Nigeria’s CAF Champions League (CAFCL) representatives Rivers United and Remo Stars are preparing for important return-leg fixtures this weekend.
The Pride of Rivers will host Mozambique’s Black Bulls, aiming to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit, while the reigning Nigeria Premier Football League champions, Remo Stars, travel down to South Africa to face Mamelodi Sundowns after a crushing 5-1 home defeat.
Both clubs confront contrasting challenges that could determine Nigeria’s representation in Africa’s premier club competition.
Rivers United – Narrow deficit, home advantage, and renewed focus
The Pride of Rivers lost the first leg 1-0 in Maputo, with Senegalese forward Moctar Diallo’s 50th-minute strike at Lalgy Arena giving Black Bulls a slender advantage.
To progress, Rivers United must score at least two goals without conceding, while the Mozambican side only requires a draw to make progress.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently rescheduled the second leg from Sunday, October 26, to Saturday, October 25, 2025, citing administrative adjustments in the competition calendar as the reason for the change, with both clubs being officially informed.
The match will kick off at 4 pm local time at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
Coach Finidi George remains confident despite consecutive defeats — first in the NPFL against Bayelsa United and then the Maputo setback.
“We know what is at stake, and we are ready to fight back. The players are motivated, and with our fans behind us, we can turn things around,” Finidi said on his arrival from Maputo.

If they must succeed, then, the Port Harcourt outfit will need to combine tactical discipline with attacking efficiency.
Making use of home support and maintaining composure under pressure will be crucial if they really want to keep their Champions League dream alive and advance to the group stage.
Remo Stars – Overwhelming deficit and logistical challenges
At the other end, Remo Stars will be facing an uphill task after the 5-1 first-leg defeat at home to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The reverse fixture in Pretoria, scheduled for October 26, has faced uncertainty due to delayed visas, with only 12 of 26 player visas processed in time.
This forced a cancellation of planned travel and a rescheduling of training and accommodation.
The Sky Blue Stars submitted their visa applications as early as October 10, 2025, in accordance with CAF guidelines.
Yet delays from South African authorities disrupted preparations, highlighting the bureaucratic hurdles Nigerian clubs often face on the continental stage—hurdles that can lead to fatigue, rushed schedules, and compromised match readiness.
Adding to the challenge, Remo Stars were also defeated 3-1 by Katsina United in the NPFL even before the first leg of this encounter.
Meaning, they have shipped in eight goals in their last two matches while scoring only two.
Yet coach Thiago Conde remains undeterred, insisting that a turnaround is possible.
“The difference of four goals is difficult, we know, but it’s not impossible. “We just have to work hard and believe,” the Remo technical adviser said after their first-leg encounter in Ikenne.

For Remo Stars, success in Pretoria will surely require a serious tactical plan, mental resilience, and sharp finishing. Anything less than that will obviously see their CAF campaign end prematurely.
Rivers United enters their return leg with a realistic chance of progression, thanks to a manageable deficit, home advantage, and a confident squad.
Remo Stars, however, face a near-impossible task — overcoming a heavy loss compounded by logistical setbacks.
