Rivers United entered their Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League campaign with cautious optimism, facing holders Pyramids FC in Cairo in what promised to be a stern test.
Under Finidi George, the Nigerian side held their own for 45 minutes, absorbing pressure and occasionally threatening on the break.
Defensive errors turned the tide against Rivers United
Yet by the second half, the tide had decisively turned, and a 3–0 defeat exposed the key factors behind their collapse.
The first reason, according to Finidi George himself, was defensive error.
The first goal they scored in the second half came from a costly mistake, he admitted. Against a team of Pyramids’ calibre, one lapse was all it took to swing momentum.
“If we had not made that mistake, the game would have gone a little bit longer, and nobody knows what’s going to happen,” he added.
Ahmed Atef El Sayed seized the opportunity, calmly slotting home seven minutes after the restart, and Rivers United found themselves chasing shadows for the remainder of the match.

Second came a lack of concentration. The disciplined defending that had frustrated Pyramids in the opening 45 minutes fell apart once the first goal was conceded.
Atef doubled his tally ten minutes later, exploiting quick transitions and capitalising on Rivers United’s momentary lapses.
As Finidi reflected, the difference was a strong first half followed by a disappointing second half. The early promise of resilience dissolved, leaving the visitors exposed to further punishment.
Fear, the third factor, emerged as a subtle but decisive force. Finidi highlighted the psychological aspect in his post-match remarks: “Just concentration, fear. At that moment, the defenders made that mistake; that was the turning point of the match.”
Once Pyramids asserted control, Rivers United’s confidence evaporated, their movements were hesitant, and their responses were reactive rather than proactive.
The hat-trick completed by Atef in the 72nd minute sealed Pyramids’ dominance and showed how momentum, once seized, can be psychologically debilitating for an underdog.
Despite the loss, there were positives to extract. Rivers United defended admirably in the first half and even fashioned one or two chances, though the final pass lacked the necessary precision.
Rivers United must refocus on next fixture
Finidi remained level-headed, noting that his team must now shift focus to their next fixture at home against RS Berkane.

“We are in the group stage; we have to motivate the boys… Each game at a time. This one is gone, and we have to look at the next one and see how we can defend, yes, mentally, because it’s not a physical team.”
Ultimately, Rivers United’s opener was a study in how fine margins define elite competitions.
Cheap goals, momentary lapses, and the weight of fear can transform a promising performance into a humbling defeat.
The challenge now is mental as much as tactical: regrouping, learning from the mistakes, and facing a formidable Berkane side with renewed focus.
The road to CAF glory now looks long, but the lessons of Cairo must be fixed in Uyo by Finidi and his boys.
