The race for highest scorer in the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, has taken a new dimension after Rivers United forward Chijioke Akuneto scored a brace in yesterday’s matchday 33.

After scoring twice to inspire Rivers United to victory over Abia Warriors with a 2-1 win at home on Sunday, Chijioke Akuneto climbed to the top of the league’s scorers chart with 16 goals.

With just five games left in the 2021/22 season, the 24-year-old, who is in his breakthrough season with Rivers United, has produced back-to-back braces in Rivers United’s past two home matches to make it to the top of the scoring chart.

Victor Mbaoma, who scored his first professional hat trick in Enyimba’s 3-0 home win over Kwara United, was yet another player who put in a brilliant performance over the weekend, placing him in second place with 15 goals.

Gombe’s Abdulazeez Yusuf isn’t giving up on ending the season as the league’s leading scorer. He also scored his 15th league goal in Gombe United’s 1-1 draw at home against Dakkada FC.

Rivers United’s Ishaq Rafiu has been in fine form, but he is now in fourth place with 14 goals, while Abia Warriors FC’s Valentine Odoh is in fifth place with 11 goals and two assists.

Tochukwu Michael’s penalty goal helped Nasarawa United defeat Enugu Rangers 1-0 at home.

Ugochukwu Leonard Aputazie earned Sunshine Stars’ home victory over Niger Tornadoes, which was also his tenth goal of the season.

The former Enyimba forward was wasting away in Heartland last campaign before his revival in Akure.

Meanwhile, Andy Okpe of Remo Stars and Ossy Martins (Enugu Rangers), a former Rivers United striker, are tied with ten goals each.
