Following the Super Falcons’ 1-0 win over Cameroon on Monday to seal a place in the final fixture of the 2024 Olympic qualifier, Head Coach Randy Waldrum has urged his players to be more efficient in scoring.
The first leg of the qualifier saw Nigeria play a goalless draw with the Indomitable Lionesses in Douala, Cameroon on February 23.
With the winner of the return fixture at Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja set to make it into the finals, Esther Okoronkwo’s first-half goal for the Super Falcons got the job done. However, Waldrum’s ladies wasted several chances to kill the game in the first half.
“In the match, we had some chances that we missed and it was a match we really struggled to win,” Waldrum said in his post-match reaction. “You can go back and look at the opportunities that we had. We could have easily finished the game at halftime.
“So, we have to be more efficient and clinical around our opponents’ vital area and convert chances into goals.”
The American also disclosed his preference for a night fixture due to the hot weather, although he conceded the Nigerian ladies are accustomed to the condition.
“I would have also preferred the match to be played in the night because the weather was hot, but we can’t complain because the players are all Nigerians and are used to it,” Waldrum said.
Next up for Randy Waldrum and the Super Falcons will be the final against the winner of South Africa vs Tanzania.
After defeating the Twiga Stars 3-0 in the first leg, the Banyana Banyana are the likeliest final opponent for the nine-time African champions before they can book a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifier games.
