The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has released the Super Eagles’ 23-man squad list to face South Africa and Benin Republic in the must-win 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.
Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi and Bundesliga champion Victor Boniface both returned to the squad, after missing out on the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury.
However, despite Finidi George’s promise of handing opportunities to home-based players, only two Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) stars made it into his first squad list as Eagles manager.
Remo Stars defender Sodiq Ismail got his first call-up to the Super Eagles squad, while Enyimba’s Ojo Olorunleke—who has been a constant in the team in recent times—also made the list.
After taking a break from the team, Udinese’s Maduka Okoye returns, as he aims to compete against Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali for Nigeria’s number one jersey.
Other notable omissions include the team’s captain Ahmed Musa, assistant captain William Troost-Ekong, and high-flying Cyriel Dessers.
Below is George’s first squad list, as he aims to overturn Jose Peseiro’s deficit in the World Cup qualifying series.
