NPFL referees have been promised consistent pay and new communication gadgets throughout the 2024/25 season.
Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) referees have been assured of improved welfare and the provision of communication gadgets throughout the 2024/25 season, which begins on Saturday, August 31.
Sani Zubairu, President of the Nigeria Referees Association, confirmed on Tuesday that the welfare of the referees will be a priority, with costs of logistics, accommodation, and overall remuneration being disbursed consistently and fairly.
“Motivation is key for referees, too, and the NFF has always promised to cater to their welfare,” Zubairu told Punch Sports Extra.
“Their payment is calculated based on the distance they travel to match venues. We spend close to ₦10 million on match officials every match day. The least amount a referee can earn is ₦200,000 or ₦150,000 per match for transport and feeding.”
“All officials have their accommodations paid for 48 hours before they arrive at their match venue. As they take off, they get their money, and they know where they will lodge. We pay for accommodation directly to the hotel, while feeding and transport allowances are paid in cash before they leave for their match venues. Things have changed; it’s not like before.”
Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), announced the procurement of some communication gadgets in June. However, Zubairu on Tuesday, confirmed that the referees are currently undergoing training on how to use the equipment for all 380 matches in the season.
“We are in training already to get the referees used to the equipment. It will be used by all four referees for all 380 matches of the NPFL, including Federation Cup matches,” he said.
“This will enhance the performance of our referees, as you cannot compare officials using gadgets with those who are not. We are still expecting more high-performance gadgets to be provided for our referees as time goes on.”
The new NPFL season will kick off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium when reigning champions Rangers International take on Federation Cup champions El-Kanemi Warriors on Saturday, August 31. Other Matchday One fixtures will take place between Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 8.
