Ex-Super Eagles midfielder Oladimeji Lawal has questioned the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a new technical adviser to oversee head coach Finidi George’s operations, after just two games in charge.
The NFF Executive Committee met on Wednesday and decided to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles, after an abyssal start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers matches.
The Eagles have failed to win any of their four matches, drawing three and losing 2-1 to Genort Rohr-led Benin Republic on Monday. The three-time African champions now sit fifth in a committee of six nations in Group C, and could miss out on the 2026 World Cup if the remaining six matches don’t go in their favour.
The NFF’s contingency plans is to appoint a technical adviser who’ll be George’s immediate superior, as far as hierarchical order in the senior men’s national team goes.
As it turns out, Lawal believes the development is an unfair one to George who has only played two games.
“How will you tell a coach that you have already contracted to learn from another coach? Why can’t we wait for him to finish his contract before taking such a step?,” he told Complete Sports.
“You gave somebody a contract; he has only played two games, and you want to employ somebody else.”
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the NFF are expected to finalise their appointment of the new technical adviser in the coming days.
