Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain has been named the winner of the 2021 Ballon d’Or award, capturing a record-extending seventh trophy.
After another record-breaking year for club and country, Messi, who left Barcelona as a free agent to join Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, was presented with the honor on Monday night in Paris.
Because last year’s edition was canceled due to Covid-19, the PSG forward was the previous winner of the award in 2019. In 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015, Messi also won the Ballon d’Or.
Bayern Munich star, Robert Lewandowski was defeated by the Argentine even though the Polish striker was the favorite to win the Ballon d’Or in 2020.
Chelsea star man, Jorginho finished third after winning the UEFA Champions League with the Blues and UEFA Euro 2020 with Italy, while Karim Benzema finished fourth and N’golo Kante finished fifth.
Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United was sixth, while Mohamed Salah, Kevin de Bruyne, Kylian Mbappe, and Gianluigi Donnarumma were seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively.
Meanwhile, Lewandowski was named Striker of the Year for his remarkable scoring prowess, while Chelsea was named Best Club after winning the Champions League.
