Coach Carmine Nunziata of the Italian U-20 team graciously acknowledged Uruguay’s exceptional performance in the final match of the World Cup tournament.
While he expressed disappointment with losing the title, he attributed much of the blame to the condition of the pitch.
However, Nunziata emphasized the commendable journey his team had throughout the competition and urged others not to overlook their achievements despite the loss.
He admitted that playing a series of challenging matches is no easy feat, and in this particular instance, Uruguay proved to be the better team, ultimately deserving the title.
In an unexpected turn of events, Uruguay emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over Italy on Sunday, clinching their first-ever Under-20 World Cup championship.
This triumph brings an end to the remarkable four consecutive victories by European teams in the tournament.
The decisive goal was scored by Luciano Rodríguez in the 86th minute, heading the ball from close range and securing Uruguay’s well-deserved victory.
Throughout the match, Uruguay showcased dominance over Italy, solidifying their claim to the title.
Notably, Uruguay’s defense played a pivotal role, conceding only three goals throughout the entire tournament, all of which occurred during their match against England in the group stage.
“The pitch has penalized any player who has more skills. We had an incredible run. This match doesn’t cancel what we have done, playing all these matches is not easy. They were better than us today.” – Nunziata said.
This victory for Uruguay follows Argentina’s World Cup triumph in December, breaking the sequence of European team successes.
