For the first time in more than a decade, the Black stars of Ghana failed to advance to the knockout stages, while their opponents claimed their maiden AFCON victory.
The Black Stars’ journey to Cameroon has come to an end after a shocking loss to the debutants.
Following a loss to Morocco and a draw with Gabon, Ghana went into the last round of Group C matches needing a win to stay in the competition.
Despite erasing a two-goal down earlier in the game, they were unable to recover from Andre Ayew’s early expulsion and were defeated 3-2 by the underdogs.
Comoros were anticipated to put up little opposition against the continental heavyweights during the Tuesday’s decider.
However, as Ghana drove for the win, they exposed gaps in the defence, and Comoros penalized them with Mogni’s third goal of the game in the 85th minute, putting an end to Milovan Rajevac’s ambitions.
Having been defeated by Gabon and Morocco in their previous two appearances, the island nation cruised to its first-ever AFCON victory.
