The future of José Peseiro, the coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, is uncertain since his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ended in June 2023.
To decide on Peseiro’s future, the NFF plans to involve the public by conducting a social media and SMS poll, as announced by the NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau.
This decision, along with the consideration of an indigenous coach as an alternative, has sparked more speculation about Peseiro’s fate.
The NFF acknowledges the challenges faced in the past with both foreign and Nigerian coaches.
Despite the risk of making the wrong choice, they remain determined to gather public input on whether to retain or dismiss Peseiro.
However, resorting to a public opinion poll on social media to determine the coach’s fate is seen by some as a waste of time and public funds, casting doubts on the credibility of football administration in Nigeria.
While Nigerians often prefer indigenous coaches, it’s important to evaluate whether this preference has truly benefited Nigerian football.
Past indigenous coaches have had mixed success, with Stephen Keshi being the only one to win a Nations Cup trophy.
Considering the previous dismissal of the German coach, Gernot Rohr, before the 2021 AFCON, and the subsequent early exit of the Super Eagles under an indigenous coach, it raises concerns about Nigeria’s ability to learn from past experiences.
