Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle could not hide his pride after Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Benin in Uyo, a result that sent the team into the 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs.
The win — powered by a Victor Osimhen hat-trick and a late Frank Onyeka strike — capped a stirring display that reignited belief in Nigeria’s campaign.
Eric Chelle praises Osimhen and Super Eagles’ unity after statement win
Speaking after the final whistle at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Chelle’s emotions were clear as he hailed Osimhen the best striker in.the world.
“I’m so proud of my players. They deserve this game,” he said. “It was not easy — new coach, new philosophy — but they achieved it really fast. Tonight, I’m happy for my players. They played a great game, especially the best striker in the world, Victor Osimhen. For me, they are my champions.”
The Super Eagles entered the match knowing only a four-goal victory would be enough to reach the play-offs.
From Osimhen’s early opener to Onyeka’s stoppage-time finish, Chelle’s side showed intensity, cohesion, and conviction — the kind of performance he’s been trying to build since taking charge.
The fans roared in approval as Nigeria dismantled Benin, erasing the pain of earlier qualification setbacks. Chelle acknowledged their role, saying:
“I’m happy for the fans. They brought us this victory. They pushed us all the way.”
‘This is not finished’ — Chelle keeps focus on World Cup play-offs
Despite the dominant win, Chelle stressed that Nigeria’s journey is far from over.
“Now we go to Morocco — it is not finished. This is the beginning,” he said. “Football is like that. Sometimes we make mistakes, sometimes we lose. But these players love the country. They give everything.”
Chelle credited his players’ mental strength and unity, reminding everyone that qualification still depends on success in the play-offs.
“If we win, it’s together. If we lose, it’s together. I’m proud of my captain, my players — this is a great team,” he concluded.
The Super Eagles will now turn their focus to a playoff clash with the Panthers of Gabon, set to take place in Morocco next month. Osimhen’s ruthless form will be vital in keeping Nigeria’s World Cup dream alive.
