Wayne Rooney has advised Super Eagles’ Taiwo Awoniyi to improve his positioning if he wants to convert more goal-scoring chances.
Rooney issued the advice after Awoniyi failed to score in Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, making it three consecutive games the Nigerian striker has fired blanks.
Awoniyi last scored for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side on February 17 when they defeated West Ham United 2-0 in their English Premier League (EPL) Matchday 24 fixture at the City Ground.
“As a forward, if you put yourself in the middle of the goal, you will get chances,” Rooney told Nottingham Post.
“He needs to take a little bit more care and perhaps make the extra pass, but he will get better opportunities.
“He has to be ready when those chances come. If he progresses to a bigger club, he will have to be taking those chances,” the Manchester United legend concluded.
Awoniyi has registered six goals and three assists in the EPL for Forest this season. With eleven games to the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, the Reds are in danger of relegation, as they sit precariously in the 17th position, four points above the relegation zone.
