Enyimba’s push to keep pressure on the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League table stumbled on Sunday as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Rivers United in Aba.
The nine-time NPFL champions dominated large spells of the match but could not find the cutting edge needed to break down a disciplined Rivers United defence.
The result keeps Enyimba second on the table but leaves them ruing missed opportunities to close the gap at the summit.
Eguma laments missed chances in a game Enyimba controlled
Enyimba’s head coach, Stanley Eguma, admitted that poor finishing cost his side all three points in the intense Matchday 7 clash.
“It was a good game, full of the quality you expect from two top NPFL sides. My players gave their best, but we were wasteful in front of goal,” Eguma said after the game.
“In the first half, we created several clear chances that could have made the difference, but we just couldn’t take them.”
The People’s Elephant showed intent from the opening whistle, pressing Rivers United deep into their half.
However, a string of missed opportunities—including two clear-cut chances inside the opening 25 minutes—proved costly as the visitors’ defence, led by their goalkeeper, held firm.
Stalemate keeps Enyimba in title race but piles on pressure
Despite failing to score, Enyimba’s point from the encounter was enough to keep them in second place on the NPFL standings.
The result, however, highlighted an emerging concern for the team: converting dominance into goals.
For Rivers United, managed by former Enyimba coach Finidi George, the draw represents a hard-earned point away from home as they remain unbeaten this season.
Enyimba’s attention now shifts to their upcoming fixture against Kun Khalifat FC, a derby game where Eguma will demand sharper finishing to keep their title ambitions on track.
