Yemi Olanrewaju, Eyinmba FC’s assistant coach has confirmed Finidi George’s departure from the club with a farewell message he posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appointed George as the Super Eagles’ head coach on April 30. Since the terms of the agreement between both parties weren’t made public, there were rumours the 53-year-old would maintain his position as Enyimba’s head coach.
However, different reports on Friday claimed the People’s Elephants and George have resorted to part ways, with his assistant Olanrewaju, poised to oversee the club’s remaining matches of the season.
While there hasn’t been any official statement from the club as regards the transition, Olanrewaju took to his X account on Saturday morning to thank and wish his boss the best as he takes on the Super Eagles assignment.
“Working with you for the past two years has been fun and inspiring… Thank you for all you do boss. I wish you the very best with [the Super Eagles],” he wrote.
George was appointed as Enyimba’s head coach in September 2021, replacing Fatai Osho. The ex-Ajax and Real Betis winger guided the Aba Warriors to their ninth Nigeria Premier League (NPFL) title last season and leaves them third on the log after 32 fixtures.
He has reportedly submitted a list of invited players for Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic in June.
