Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a 2-1 defeat to Mexico in the first of their two international friendlies on Sunday morning at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, in what was head coach Jose Peseiro’s first game in charge.
The Mexicans took the lead in the 12th minute with a great finish, and they dominated the first half, despite Francis Uzoho’s outstanding saves to keep the opposition at bay.
The Super Eagles became more involved in the game, and eight minutes into the second half, Cyriel Dessers equalized with a powerful header – his first international goal for the national team.
In the 56th minute, however, captain William Troost-Ekong conceded an own goal while attempting to clear the ball from an intricate cross into the box.
The game was tense, with a few players from Nigeria’s domestic league making their debut, but the team held on for a laudable victory.
On Thursday, the Eagles will face Ecuador before preparing for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone and Mauritius in June.
