Ousmane Dembele has been handed a contract ultimatum by Barcelona president Joan Laporta despite the club being in dire financial straits.
The Spanish giants’ finances have recently gotten out of control due to the expensive contracts and transfer fees paid out for a lot of players.
Many of these players have either left the team or are looking likely to leave in order to help the club manage the situation.
Barcelona has tried to earn money by selling a piece of the broadcast rights as one of their remedies to their problems, but they haven’t been able to sign new players.
Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen are yet to be registered as a result of their exorbitant wage costs. After they bought Ferran Torres from Manchester City in January, this problem initially became apparent.
Dembele is a long-term transfer target for Chelsea and is currently a free agent after his deal with Barcelona expired. At one point, it seemed as though he had no future at the club.
Laporta confirmed that he must embrace Barcelona’s recent contract offer else he will be dismissed if he doesn’t reduce his pay and comply with the club’s demands.
“Dembele has an offer, they have answered and we continue talking. And We are willing to continue talking until we are interested. If he does not accept our proposal, it cannot be. He has to accept it because if not, there is no interest on our part. We have to adapt the files to the salary scale that we have marked so that there are no imbalances.” – He said.
Adding that;
“We don’t have a hurry in the market, but we know that we can’t let much time go by because maybe the players we are interested in will stop waiting”
