Ex-Super Eagles manager Bonfrere Jo has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint Emmanuel Amunike as the head coach of Nigeria’s men national football team.
Bonfrere who guided Nigeria to victory in the 1996 Olympic Games endorsed Amunike in an interview with Voice of Nigeria (VON), where he exemplified the 53-year-old’s strong mentality, discipline, and technical savvy.
“Yes, I agree Nigeria needs a local coach at the moment. Not a foreigner,” the Dutchman reechoed Segun Odegbami’s call for the appointment of a local coach.
“But the country will have everything to gain if the authorities appoint Emmanuel Amunike for the job. I know him very well.
“He has a very strong mentality. He has the discipline and technical savvy to achieve results. In fact, if the Federation calls me to provide technical backup to Amunike, I will gladly accept the task,” Bonfrere concluded.
Amunike led the Golden Eaglets team that had Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chkwuweze to the 2015 World Cup triumph in Chile.
He was appointed as the coach of the Tanzania national team on August 6, 2018, but he resigned a few months later after a three-match losing streak at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
